IPL stands for “Intense Pulsed Light.” Using this light pulse, IPL Photo Rejuvenation gently erases skin damage and rejuvenates the texture and complexion of the skin, correcting benign skin conditions such as sun damage, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and other brown or red discolorations. During the treatment, the patient’s eyes are covered and a clear gel is applied to the skin being treated. The surface of the hand piece is applied to the skin and then pulsed, causing the patient to feel a slight stinging sensation like the snapping of a small rubber band. Each treatment takes approximately 20 minutes. The procedure may cause some slight redness for a few hours, but normal activities may resume immediately.
IPL is usually performed over a series of three treatments. Within the first few treatments, patients notice smoother skin, smaller pores, diminished sun spots and decreased rosacea. Treatments last 15 to 30 minutes and should be repeated three to five times for optimal results. The effects of IPL can last several years if patients take good care of their skin and are careful to wear sunscreen.
